new year, day one

well after so long, i'm back at it. my old training partner darrin and i are going to do ironman branson in september. 2010 was the first year for this race and the reviews have been great. they've also all warned of how difficult this race is, particularly the bike. i've seen race reports claiming anywhere from 3500 to 7000 feet of climbing for the 56 mile bike. yikes. my family and darrin's family have vacationed together in branson several times and love staying at the Chateau, which is the host hotel. we commented in the past how cool but difficult a triathlon would be there. well now there's a half ironman there, and we figured we'd make the race an excuse to take a couples vacation in september.

since i last did any formal training several years ago, i've gotten woefully out of shape. i have a looong way to go to get in any kind of shape to tackle a sprint triathlon, let alone a half ironman. in the mountains. beginning monday, i have 38 weeks to get ready. that sounds like alot of time, but considering where i'm starting from, it's really not.

today was just a little three mile run. my first run of any kind since last summer. i strolled out into the windy but sunny 30 degree weather fully realizing the 9 month task in front of me, but looking forward to getting to it. the first half of the out and back was directly into the wind, and i took a little walk break as i got to the turnaround. i ran the whole way back and negative split the run by about two minutes. i hate wind. anyone who ran across my old blog might remember that...

i don't really have a formal training plan yet. being this far out from race day, and this far out of shape, i just need some base fitness. i'll be doing alot of slow miles in the next couple of months. when i get 16-20 weeks out, i'll probably look for a half ironman training plan and use that as a guide.

well day one is over. many more to come. bring it.
